What Is Zantac?
Zantac is the brand name for ranitidine, an H2 blocker medication used to treat gastric ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn, and indigestion. It works by blocking histamine, which reduces the production of stomach acid.
In April 2020, the FDA requested that all Zantac products be removed from the market after finding that ranitidine can contain dangerous levels of N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) — a known carcinogen. NDMA concentrations in Zantac were found to increase over time and accelerate when stored above room temperature.
A newer product called Zantac 360 has a different chemical composition and is not subject to these allegations. If you took the original Zantac at any point between 2000 and the present, you may qualify for a lawsuit.

How Liability Is Determined
Ranitidine, the active ingredient in Zantac, is inherently susceptible to producing high concentrations of NDMA — a carcinogen. This means the very design of the product may be flawed, regardless of how it was manufactured or stored. Zantac lawsuits argue this constitutes a product liability design defect under strict liability standards, which can be easier to prove than negligence.
Manufacturers are legally required to warn users about risks that are not obvious or foreseeable. Zantac's manufacturers knew — or should have known — about the NDMA risk and failed to adequately warn patients or physicians. A failure to warn claim holds manufacturers accountable for withholding information that would have allowed consumers to make an informed choice.
