On November 24, 2025, Abbott announced a medical device correction for certain FreeStyle Libre 3 and Libre 3 Plus glucose sensors in the U.S. after internal testing revealed that some sensors may report falsely low glucose readings, which could lead to incorrect treatment decisions.
Abbott said the issue was traced to a single production line and has since been resolved, and they do not expect significant supply disruptions. The statement continued to state that approximately 3 million sensors in the U.S. are affected, though about half are estimated to have expired or been used.
Abbott reported 736 severe adverse events globally (57 in the U.S.) and seven deaths (none in the U.S.) potentially associated with the issue. Consumers can check if their sensors are impacted and request free replacements at FreeStyleCheck.com. Readers and mobile apps are not affected.
Severe cases of inaccurate readings may result in inappropriate insulin dosing, posing risks of hypoglycemia or other complications.
